I haven’t been on a job market in a while. When a recruiter sends an email (or over the phone) and asks your salary expectations, what do you say? Do you ask them back the salary range of the position ? Position: Data Engineer. #data Update: Intel recruiter doesn’t want to disclose the range due to confidentiality reasons. Lol…. #intel
If you don't, then how do you know it's worth it?
I tell them to give me a range or they can kick rocks
Are they really obliged to give the range? Just like we don't have to tell our current salary?
I like my job so I always give them the number that'll make me switch (+12% or better .. depending on the company)
Try +20% or better
Aren’t you just screwing your self if they offer you 15% more when they would have done 30% more?
I tell them I don't know yet or that I need more info to answer. I've also just said I expect market pay.
Absolutely. Then they will provide a range that they're willing to pay and ask if that works for you. This puts you on a better position bc it allows you to reject them vs the alternative.
Asking for market rate is a sure fire way too shut the convo down. It’s ok to say you need to hear a little bit lore about the role before answering. You can also give a rather larger range. Finally, it’s always good to follow up with “how does that range align to the expectations for this role”? Based on their response, you usually have a really good idea if it’s too high, too low, or just right
Thank you everyone! I will do that!
Not in the beginning, unless you're seriously concerned about their ability to pay well.
I recently got a call saying that they want a number after my first round of interview and after that they will proceed for further rounds. What should I do? Role: Sr Associate Data Science in Texas JPMC
If they absolutely insist give them a very wide range
What’s is your YOE ? I have had calls with 15+ recruiters lately so I can give you some context. All of them asked for my expectations
Could you please tell about your experience with different recruiters
I tell them what my expectations are.
Ask their budget for the role. If they are coy, use them for practice.
This is the correct response. Many companies cannot match my high expectations so I am direct with them and ask for the range. Some companies give me their range which might be much lower than mine. I just tell them directly that it won’t work, politely. Done. No more time wasted for them or me.

You ask what's their range. Or you say you would like to hear more about the job and kick the can down the road
