Do you dispute medical bills, even small ones?

I got a bill of $260 for a dr visit. My kid saw a doctor for 5 mins (literally) for an allergy, dr said it's not worth doing any allergy test/screening/visit because the test is risky for this age group. Fine, but the bill came in full.
If I were a consultant, I wouldn't charge full price for a service if I turned my client away. But, doctors are a whole different story... thoughts?
$260 isn't going to break the bank, I'm just asking for the principle.
edit: problem solved. They charged me a really small fee after I complained. Thanks guys

On what merit do you have to dispute it? You booked an appointment. You consumed the doctors and staffs time. You took up an examination room which must then be cleaned as you leave. This isnโ€™t a free consultancy service. Pay the bill.

By that logic software engineers should get paid for their time during the interview! It's one day worth of job and should be paid like $300-500

Time is not the factor in these cases, it's the quality of service.

Your logic is wrong. Engineers are paid for their interview since they already have a salaried job and the hiring company provides free meals, hotel, airfare, and car rental.

The OP made an appointment. The doctor gave them dedicated time to see the patient and make an assessment on care (in this case none). OP feels they got no value out of it and doesnโ€™t want to pay. Join the club and smash like button and hit subscribe. Weโ€™ve all been there.

This is a standard fee schedule for the visit. A doctor canโ€™t afford to tell you if itโ€™s worth a visit or not over the phone. They would be liable for the consequences if they were wrong. And in this freakin sue-happy culture, that would be a mistake.

I can buy you a beer and have a long explanation about why healthcare is so damn expensive in this country. But itโ€™s not because of people like me.

Wait times in the Bay Area are very long for healthcare and specialists like immunologists the OP likely saw.

And Your beef should be with your insurance company. Not me. Whatโ€™s also clear is people understand very little about how health insurance works in this county. Itโ€™s complicated.

    • I've saved over $30K by understanding medical codes. It's a 20 hour course in community college. I breezed through it pretty easy and then just find the updated codes when they change them. I think it took me one Friday evening and most of a Saturday. If you can leetcode you can figure it out and it's definitely worth it.

I never bothered since Iโ€™m just fighting to save the insurance company money. My time is more valuable than that.

She charged for unnecessary reasons. These people know exactly how to suck money from the patients. Ask for the breakdown cost

  • Ya well, you pay for the doctor's knowledge that the benefits of the allergy test are not worth the risk for the child's age! It kinda sucks when we look at it from " the time spent in examination room" perspective... But believe me, it is definitely worth it from a long term perspective...
