Do you feel bad for the poor, or do you think they deserve it?

Suddenly my YouTube feed is now recommending all these poor/homeless vids, prob because I was watching one on affordability in the Bay Area. I have mixed feelings for poor and homeless people. On one hand, shit does happens, and the type of situation you were born in can give you a major advantage or disadvantage in life. Also HCOL areas have stupid zoning restrictions that prevents construction of affordable high density housings. But sometimes I see their stories and shake my head. Examples like the homeless person spending $60/mth on cell phone (I spend $20/mth). People without family and financial planning and having like a gazillion kids and they earn $40k in CA. Nobody also asks why don't they relocate to cheaper cities/states? All the jobs I see these people have are not specific to CA. They could decent lives in cheaper places like GA, NV, etc.

We have no right to judge unless we are in their shoes.

Try to understand the person's world, not the person.

Just be kind. And don't judge. I don't think anyone likes to be homeless. Then there are mental health issues.

That’ll get people off the streets! /s

What people get wrong is that you can’t generalize the group. Obviously there is a combination of both privilege as well as talent/ambition. The mistake is to attribute the cause of their current situation entirely to one or the other. I know some folks who are in bad situations and lemme tell you, not all cylinders are firing. I know a family who inherited $150k from a parents death. They were already in 100-150k of student loan debt. The obvious choice here is to clear your name. But what did they choose to do instead? Quit working for a year because they felt like they deserved time off. They ate out every night, bought a trailer home, and bought all the shit they could. That $150k was gone in a year. AFTER the money was gone, they bought a mustang 5.0 for 50k, probably sub prime. And no job so continued to pursue more education. Now the family is 250k in student loan debt and ran out of money to spend so they need to go on gov aid. The family they grew up with are good people. Very proper, good traditional principles. Not super well off but they know how to maintain good status in society. I know people these days like to say that it’s all about how you were raised. But it’s irresponsible to ignore either one of talent or privilege. Some people just are bad at it. Some had a shit situations that they can’t get out of. Finally, a few had shit situations but were so talented they overcame it. It all varies. But important point here is do they deserve it. My response is what good is it to make that judgement? Is it that if they deserve it that we shouldn’t help them? My ideal is we should keep this from happening whether or not they deserve it because it’s not helpful. To society. So I think deserving is irrelevant. We should have systems in place to help prevent people from ending up on the street because it’s good for the people who are not homeless.

I think people generally want the same things - happiness being the primary one. From what I have experienced, if someone is poor it’s usually because they don’t have the tools or support to excel. That may come in the form of mentorship, education or even a little cash to get started again. Nobody wants to be poor.

You have some insight and wisdom from 8th grade kids. Thanks for 👎

When youre homeless/poor you don’t have the same resources to be able to get the best deals. You shouldnt think that because you have a better cell phone bill than a homeless person that they deserve to be homeless. No one deserves to be homeless no matter what when we for sure have the resources to provide shelter for everyone.

Microsoft cepo Nov 30, 2019

No one in their right mind thinks the poor deserve it.

Amazon random-ayy Nov 30, 2019

Some people absolutely do. If you spend money like a fool, or if you refuse to work and better yourself, then you absolutely deserve to be poor.

If you spend money like a fool, there is likely a mental health issue. These people need rehabilitation, not your judgemental ass.

I think you focusing on the wrong issues when it come to homelessness homelessness doesn’t always become a thing because you didn’t manage your money well it can come in many forms divorce bankruptcy you name it there many causes for homelessness so to generalize an entire group isn’t beneficiary to anybody but to develop a system to rule out the ones that choose the ones that don’t

Putting homelessness and poorness in the same bucket is unfair

Oracle Jawhorse Nov 30, 2019

No. Don't feel bad at all. Most homeless are due to their choices in life: drugs, alcohol, etc Most would rather stay on the street rather than seek shelter because the shelters have rules: eg curfew and no drinking Most make a handsome amount of money just standing on the corner. No one is starving, thirsty or lacking shelter. It is almost a lifestyle choice at this point.

Microsoft tbNR61 Nov 30, 2019

Being predisposed to addiction is not a choice. I drink and have done plenty of drugs, and have never had a problem, but many people do. Most prefer to stay away from shelters because they're hotbeds of disease. They do not make good money panhandling, this is ridiculous. I almost thought your post was satirical, then I remembered this is blind, which is disproportionately filled with toxic people from around our career field.

Oracle Jawhorse Nov 30, 2019

Lol. The virtue signaling. Predisposed does not mean inevitably doomed. Homeless afraid of disease? Lol. Sleeping drunk on sidewalk in urine caked clothes is more sanitary? Panhandling not lucrative? Plenty of YouTube vids prove otherwise. I don't think you are satire. Just ignorant or obtuse; maybe both.
