I recently took a few interviews as practice and surprisingly got offers that are about 15% higher base than my current salary. My employer has made it clear a couple of times that they do not negotiate salaries off cycle but I have heard of people getting a one-time bonus to keep them happy. Is it worth asking for a counter offer or thank them for thr opportunity and leave in good terms? Software Engieer 3 years of experience current salary 135k with 15k worth of options in pre-IPO company. offers ranging from 135k-160k base various stock plans that are "worth" 20k-40k Obviously with stock nobody knows if it will be worth anything but at my current company I have high confidence that stocks will be worth something.
You won’t get a counteroffer until: - you’ve already told your current company that you’ve decided to accept another offer - they actually give you the opportunity to ask for a counteroffer, with a conversation that looks like “what would it take to get you to stay?” Sadly, companies won’t typically stretch themselves to give you a counter until you have one foot out the door. Also, Don’t assume that you’ll be offered one. Many companies understand that people who accept counters are likely to leave within a year anyway, so they might not make the effort.
Got it that makes sense. I just assumed I would get one since I'd like to think I'm an above average performer. But you're right I can't just assume it would happen. I'm thinking of just asking for a raise equivalent to my new offer and see if they give it. And if they don't I can give my 2 week notice.
My experience with this - if you just ask for a raise without giving more context, the best they will do is say “we’ll do it in the next performance cycle”. Good luck nevertheless!
Depends on the reason your leaving, if your un-happy with the company and what your doing, offer will not change that. If you got recruited and need more money to live. Then this could be a reason to take a counter offer. Or just ask for a raise for good reason. But in most cases counter offers are not good, if they value you they should have been taking care of you. Hope this helps, fyi happiness is not always about money but what your doing!
If you’re unhappy, don’t bother with the counter offer. I will also say, some companies really won’t meet $ demands like that, especially if the talent pool is hot and many applicants to choose from. My final note, if you really think you’re worth the money and you want to stay, I wouldn’t position it as “xyz company is offering me this much more.” I’d position it as, here is where the market is at for a person of my experience and background. I’ve done xyz and abc to prove my value or you’ve brought cost savings or revenue to the company because of your efforts. Sell why you deserve the increase. If they can’t see it or decline to even have the discussion, take the other offer.
Leaving is always better than counter offer. Almost always. Is there a particular reason you would want to stay?
So I actually don't mind staying at my current company since it's pretty stable and the work is meaningful. But it's just annoying that they don't pay me appropriately. It's also just a hassle to go to another place and feel like I have to start from scratch again. More than anything I'd like to avoid dealing the process of switching.
So u have the answer yourself I guess. U r paying a monetary price for stability and convince. Nothing wrong with that. It's up to u to set ur priorities.
