Social life cannot thrill in silicon valley - big concerts, events etc. are less willing to come here compared to many big american cities. There is a peer pressure not to drive expensive cars or show up to work in designer clothes etc. People only care about maximizing TCs, buying Vanguard funds and a few $M house, and then putting their kids to a private school for a horse race. Anything wrong in the picture?
Do you mean techies suck at wasting money?
Not buying designer clothes is failing at spending money. I'm such a failure
You have a rather myopic set of criteria that only appeals to young folks.
Yea..
All depends on how influenced you are by peer pressure; if you're looking for a mate, what type of folks you like to hang out with. Music/bands was no problem when I lived there(if you don't mind going to SF). I lived in San Fran years ago when single. The whole area was very transient, so it was just hard to find a tribe.
We donate money for greater good.
Do you think all these techies who spend all their free time on this forum to maximize their TC are doing it for philanthropic purposes?
SV is not a place that values luxury brands, but that doesn't mean people don't spend money on ridiculous bullshit here. Teslas ain't cheap.
I definitely agree with this. I see techies who make a lot of money complaining about their social and dating lives but they won't spend to improve both. Most people end up working a full career anyway might as well live a little more and save a little less.
To be fair, even if they spent, do you really think it would make that much of a difference?
I think dressing a little nicer, eating at better restaurants, driving a decent car and doing some fun activities can go a long way in your dating and social life. Dont underestimate the social effect of being able to throw a few bucks around.
“There is a peer pressure not to drive expensive cars or show up to work in designer clothes etc.” ??? Ever since I moved to the Bay Area a few years ago, it feels like there is more peer pressure for designer clothes and expensive cars. A lot of people talk about how someone they know bought an expensive house near the hills or exotic cars or multiple international vacations
Lol. There are people who spend money, and those who value other things. Its not a tech thing. In any normal profession, there are people who spend, and those who dont
Well this is not entirely true - the culture and tendencies at LVMH vs. Goldman Sachs vs. Cisco vs. New York Times vs. Caterpillar would be VASTLY different.
You know every employee at respective companies? People meet those with similar taste. I assume you hang out with low spending tech people so you have this weird delusion? My experiences with some fellows at tech industry, as well as bank industry, are vastly different from what you are describing 🤔. There are a lot of people on earth. A LOT, meaning you cant generalize based on your limited perspective
