Does Amazon fire a new employee?

Does Amazon fire a new employee within first 6-7 months? What are generally the expectations from new employees in Amazon, how much ramp-up time they get? Can a new employee get away after doing some blunders in the initial months?

That's not a good question, but I'll bite: not unless you're really bad.

No question is a bad question. I know a person on my team who was phased out in 8 months

Thanks for coddling the op.

They fired a new hire in my team after 6 months

Reason?

Amazon sonJnow May 11, 2019

Poor performance

I’m starting with amazon next month and nervous about this too

Heard such thing. Also heard about interns getting fired.

I imagine interns got it rough @AZ

The internship -> offer rate is incredibly low, even for hard workers

Few pieces of advice based on my tenure and observations: start with a clean slate, forget all the processes you followed in your previous company, get used to Amazon internal tooling and deployments, get used to working independently and search through internal wikis, it's ok to say don't know than say BS, be in good terms with your manager by setting up 1:1's regularly and set expectations accordingly

Fastest I've seen is 8 months (college hire randomly assigned to us). Kid was hired through the online assessment program alone and was totally incompetent, to the point of becoming a serious liability.

Any company does this. I've seen someone fired at Google after 8 months because he was bad, but he was in PIP before getting fired. I've seen very bad "engineers" at Amazon who do just fine, but Amazon may be less ruthless and not even offer PIP. If you're just joining and you mess something up, it's probably not a big deal, it would have been your TL's responsibility to foresee something like that and prevent it. But Amazon is all about pointing fingers

They're all in PiPs before fired, that's how HR sleeps at night

Usually you have 3-4 months to start showing some value. If you hit the 5 month mark and are still way below bar for your role and level, expect dev list, then PIP by 6 month mark. Around 7-8 months to being gone.

Not because of blunder if you’re moving fast and in good book. But may be if misfit, distracted, didn’t do onboarindg/rampup properly..

Amazon pizzacheez May 11, 2019

I’ve seen it happen to really bad college hires
