I joined Intel recently as a package design engineer. I naturally updated my LinkedIn profile in a few days and then forgot about it. Opened it after a month to see a message from an Apple Recruiter. I did not respond to it because I thought if all goes well, how could I jump companies within a month or two of joining Intel. It's very unethical. In hindsight, now I believe I should have tried.
It is ethical as long as you don't leak trade secrets.
Nothing unethical about it. With that said, always maximize your career for the long term and not the current position. Since you're just starting, think of whether Intel or Apple will be a better place for you to learn and grow professionally
Yes. Intel has been bleeding the best to Apple for several years, hardware and software. The pay is at least double - that's why.
Be selfish. This is business. Look for your own interest. Where is better for your career?
Always be looking. You don't have to jump but always know your market value. Talk to them. If you have Apple in your resume, you'll get every interview you want for the next 10 yrs. And they'll always ask what it was like working there. Intel? Not so much.
Thank you all for comments and suggestions. Will reach out to the recruiter who contacted me. It's been almost 3 months since he contacted. I am not sure if he will even respond, but am gonna give it a shot. I will update how it goes.
yes, you should. but know that Apple recruiters have been heavily targeting specific intel skillsets on linkedin for the last several years. i get pinged by them constantly
sillycon - like many of us, I know you wish to leave Intel. If you are pinged constantly, why aren't you at Apple ?
👍🏽
one thing i can tell is... recruiter is not really reading your profile at all. They use,a couple of keywords to filter out tons of ppl, then send out an email to introduce thier open positions to see if you are interested. As you created or updated LunkedIn, it flags someone to take a look at your new update. Do you really think Apple is interested in someone who just got a first job without having any job experience?
It's my first job in US. I had worked for an Year in Malaysia, one internship in NZ, and a couple internships in US. Total of 2-2.5 years experience I would say. I agree that my profile update might have flagged a recruiter. That's exactly my point. No other recruiter contacted me. So my question was that does this mean that Apple is targeting Intel employees?
no, as i said, nowadays, recruiters dont even read your or our profiles. Just screen them with a couple of keywords to search some specific job category ppl. Then just send an email or msg if you or we are interested in the open job positions. Not necessarily apple is looking for intel engineers.
Why unethical? Do you think Intel or any other company really care about you and would not fire you in a heartbeat if they had to? Be a mercenary. There is no loyalty in this business, only respect.
This is my first job. I am uncomfortable with confrontations regarding job change. I hope to get better at this.
It will get easier, you need to look at where you want to be and plot a path to that point. SM is correct about loyalty however you do want the respect which can pay off latter.
