Austin is getting really expensive and competitive for real estate, whereas other areas in Texas may still be affordable.

It's easy to save 2x by going elsewhere in Texas (outside of Austin metro). But will you get paid less than in Austin?

Does Amazon, Facebook, Google, anyone else offering remote, pay less in Texas than in Austin? Or is the pay the same for remote work out of both Austin and Texas? #tech

DFW area is gross. Lots of driving, traffic, everything is a chain and a frontage road. That area has no soul.

      Austin is 1000x better.

Austin is an overrated small town with limited mobility and growth. Your pay has 80% chance to remain same or grow less in Austin than other places like By Area or Seattle. While Austin has higher property taxes than rest of Texas and houses/ CoL is twice as expensive than rest of state.

Not everyone likes it. Had friend come visit with their couple friends from LA. They were going with agent to check out houses. His friend can be remote and transfer to Austin with no pay cut. After touring houses around, he felt that train has already left. And he may be right, but compared to LA area it is still cheap…
I for example like it here and would never live in LA, NY or SF. And i used to live in one of capitals in EU until 19…

Not overrated, not for everyone. I love it. But I'd say try it first before you regret moving here and shitting on it later.

Surrounding counties of Austin are getting expensive too. Seeing people buying in small towns an hour north of Austin and still paying >300k in towns that mostly only have trailer parks. I feel like they’re going to be sorry in a few years when markets stabilize and they realize who their neighbors are.

How about areas like San Marcos or new Braunfels? You can still get a massive house for cheap down in new Braunfels

Relatively, prices have sky rocketed in those cities as well; traffic on that section of the I-35 Corridor is terrible always. I personally wouldn’t want to live there. Basically zero night life, no infrastructure, not transit, you will definitely be doing gentrification and likely displacing a multi-generational family that’s been priced out, older population, low college education rate, limited dating pool. Quality of healthcare may also be a concern. There’s no culture: no symphonies, art galleries, theaters, cultural diversity. But of a food desert, don’t think they have anything like Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.

It’s not all bad. New Braunfels has a water park, it’s a German immigrant town originally so it has its own culture, history and heritage. They likely have some farmers markets, you will certainly find some local southern, German, BBQ restaurants that are excellent and there is probably *some* fine dining.

It’s far enough away that you’re not just going to want to pop over to Austin or SA for more options but they will continue to grow and become more progressive so maybe in 40 years they will definitely have changed but unlikely to catch up with baseline major cities.

I mean, if you’re married, have kids, don’t go out after 9PM and are okay with bottom 20% education system for your kids I guess it’s somewhat quiet? Your kids will definitely want to escape.

I’m 42, gay and single so none of this is appealing to me. They’re quaint places to visit for those unique local things but I would absolutely hate to live there.
