Does MBA make sense for me?

Dec 29, 2019 12 Comments

Happy holidays everyone!

I've been thinking about the MBA path and wanted to get Blind's perspective on whether or makes sense for me to do an MBA, executive MBA, or just keep going forward in my career? I want to stay in Product Management post MBA and work towards CPO/CEO positions in the future.

Background:
2 years at Big 4 Consulting
6 months into an Associate PM role at a top tech startup

Hey yes you are doing good today and tomorrow you should be able to get your help you need to help others like blind people. Please do the right thing and then you can get your money.

Graduating from top 10 program this spring, starting a PM role at Uber after graduation. I would actually say that if your goal is PM, leaving a good company at the position you actually want to be in doesn’t make sense unless you have an extremely compelling reason.

In my case, the MBA and side programming roles was necessary to make a transition from the military into tech. In your case there does not seem to be a compelling reason other than ‘it seems like a thing ambitious/competitive people do’ (lot of folks like that in B school).

If you’re really bent on B school now, I’d say take the GMAT and apply to Harvard/Stanford. If you get in, the networks from those two schools alone provide a solid value add, plus a route into VC if that floats your boat. If you don’t get in, I’d say save yourself $200k (tuition + living expense + opportunity cost) and build PM experience where you are. Can always apply later if you find a compelling reason (want to go back to consulting, move into banking/VC, etc)

I would say not unless you go to top 10 mba program (or go somewhere else part-time) since you are already doing what you want to do at a good company.

If you need an MBA to distinguish you then you must be average. MBA = must be average.

Everything you have done is what many MBAs aspire to. With 2.5 YOE an MBA isn't going to guarantee a leadership position. I think you are capable of getting that for yourself in your current situation.

What you need is perhaps some LDP (leadership development program) program that can get you on the leadership track.

If it’s a top program, yes.
