I agree, they are not as well known in ML. UCSD is very well known for systems, within UC’s they’d be ranked 2nd after Berkeley, in systems.

Dasgupta is good probabilistic approches. Freund practically invented boosting (along w Shapiere). McAuley is a recsys expert.

Not particularly. They have Sanjoy Dashupta who did foundational work in Theoretical ML. I seem to recall they hired a new graphics lab or some applied area of ML, they are decent but not particularly good
UCSD can be summed up by “decent, but not particularly good” SD is really nice though. UTC area is okay
