Does YoE include PhD time?

So I got a PhD after X years and then moved to a related industry for Y years. What's my YoE, Y or X+Y?

Probably with some discount of X unless your PhD is directly relevant to the area you’re working on

Depends on what you did in your PhD. Some people pulls of pretty significant complex projects and open sources as part of thesis. Then you can write down your PhD time as experience in software development as well.

Y years unless you worked on a publicly facing product that you shipped and supported with a team of at least 4 or more people for several years as part of your academic experience.

Why would you even think your PhD years matter in industry?? Working on your thesis alone for a few years doesn’t matter much to industry.

Intel V6ene OP Aug 24, 2019

That would depend on your job. Most of the skills I use in mine were acquired during PhD

Bloomberg offByOme Aug 24, 2019

Still you never used those skills in industry.

It usually counts towards 3-4 years of industry experience.
