Google lately seems like a big non-profit to me. People are going on strikes, writing petitions and reviewing every goddamn social issue. It’s kinda noble, but Google is slowly losing the market. Web search ads are slowly (yet) going down the hill with mobile growth, Amazon is quietly taking over advertisers as people search products on Amazon instead of Google a lot now, and the fundamental problem of searching through apps is not resolved. Am I wrong?
Why did this happen?
Remember how large Google is. 500 loud people who sign a petition will make the news but it’s less than 1% of the company. Further, assume it’s mostly the same 500 people who are doing all of this headline-making stuff that isn’t work. You have a fair point about a culture that tolerates those people at all but it’s unlikely to be the epidemic the press makes it out to be.
Exactly. It’s kind of like saying everyone at Kaspersky is a Russian spy.
@meowwwoem True.....And it’s also kind of saying everyone works at Wells Fargo opens fake accounts :)
It does take a toll on the company I believe. 500 loud people captures at least 5000's people attention within the company. A lot of PR money needs to be spent for the incidents. Some top talent who are more work focused might raise eyebrow, which makes keeping its talent pool top notch harder.
Trust me, no matter what they do. Almost 80% of the software engineers in the world will take a Google offer any given day.
Not if G starts losing money which is a possibility given the heavy bet on cloud which is not likely to pay off (in part due to lack of focus on the important things and too much attention wasted on things like this).
One thing I noticed. A lot of people I follow left G and joined MSFT.
Why do they do that?

Majority of groups are content and very happy at google. Work has purpose. Culture is exceptionally good and pedigree of professionals we get to work and learn from is one of the best . It’s may seem to outside world it’s a Non profit but on contrary we have 6 months evaluations and they are rigorous ones. Said that are there bad pockets ? Yes but number is small . We here at google are given lot of support to voice our concerns and I am glad leadership is there to support us openly and not be authoritative to shut us up
Hello Sundar Sir , refer me please to Google .
Thank you Sundar, thanks for paying industry salary to your post doc geeks
You are looking at it wrong. If google solves voice search/interaction really well and has self driving transportation, that will open a whole other world for advertisement. Seems to me they are investing enough into both. As for in-app monetization, if you exclude big publishers that develop their own ad platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Amazon), what’s left is almost exclusively monetized through google, and on Android specifically, there’s even more opportunity for high value inventory that will only grow in the future. You are probably on the wrong team where there is no culture of aligning engineering vision with company goals in a way that promotes bottom up innovation. That’s why you see SJW, strikes, etc, instead of innovation in your team. Switch teams now, your team is bored and it’s not good for your career even if you have Google on the resume.
I’m not with Google at all, not that I wasn’t invited by my former colleagues working for Google security team. I’m judging more based on news and media.
I joined Google and immediately took one and a half year off for disability. It's great. Stress free and barely need to get anything done. Unbeatable wlb in the valley. I show up at work at 11 am, go to dance Plex every day at 4pm for free dance classes and head home after that. If you don't have good health, Google is the right place for you. A nonprofit for sure. How many of the NW reports are real?
Feel the same. I declined a google offer because I don’t have time for all that. I want to get things done.
