I’m a new grad SWE at Google, started a few months ago. I find my job fufilling and enjoy it but never work more than 40 hours a week and never plan to. I moved to San Francisco knowing almost no one and though I’ve made friends and have a few occasional hobbies I really miss the constant activity and mutliple commitments of college. I’ve looked into dogwalking on Wag or delivering food on UberEats, but lately I’ve been really onto the idea of an actual second job like bartending on nights and weekends. I’m young and in a long distance relationship and it seems like a great time to make a little extra money and have a new commitment so I don’t continue to come home and watch netflix 4 nights a week and most of my weekends. To be clear I’m making more than enough money and don’t have any abnormal expenses. This is just as much about having a commitment other than my day job as it is making extra money. Does anyone do anything like this or have any advice? Also I don’t really have any interest in a side job that involves coding/tech. I like it but I would rather explore something else even if it’s a more mindless job. TC: 163
I do carpentry and sell on Etsy. If there is anything you like to do focus on that and see if you can monetize it.
If you don’t know what you like join different classes like cooking, scuba diving, skiing, etc etc and try to find something you like and something you could master and be good at
I would focus on finding something you enjoy to do in your spare time rather than picking up a second job. Def not bar tending, throws off the daily schedule too much. I'd recommend joining a local gym and working out (if you aren't already), physical health is so important for mental health. Reading material to help you grow personally and professionally is a great activity for spare time as well.
On the same vein then, any hobby advice?
I bartended for 5 years post college while working my regular day job. Granted I did it because I was older than most my friends who all worked in “the industry”. Let me hang out with friends meet cool people, met a ton of life long friends and acquaintances and added bonus didn’t spend money going out on the weekends.
Golf, building /shooting firearms, etc. Endless opportunities
Become a real estate agent.
Consider making YouTube vids 😆
Focus on your job. Do extra and get promoted. That will pay off much more than all you listed.
