Does anyone think that the netflix recommendation system is terrible?

I think it is very bad. It does not have basic features like best rated one or awarded one, and so on. And also I do not like that Netflix changed the original cover of a movie or show. They think they are doing really good at this and I just saw the opposite

Same experience here. What shows up in my Apple TV main screen is no really things I want to watch

Microsoft Wonderword Sep 17, 2018

Agreed. Someone needs to redesign their UI to list with better organization. Continue watching should come first in my opinion. Sorting is very limited. Recommendations could have listed by genres and newly released ones. It should also be able to sort by release years (or select time interval). It feels just a mess and it looks like a beta version release. I don’t even know what to expect when I scroll down. I don’t see many changes over the years either. What are they working on? They need to hire good product designers and user interface experts. Bring someone from Amazon perhaps.

If over 10 agreed, I will unsubscribe it.If over 20 agreed, I will short the stock:)

Completely agree. Glad it’s not just me. Sure, the Netflix recommender system is a textbook example of recommender system. But I feel for some sites, recommender system is not essential for their core business. A basic discovery system with genre, popularity and basic attribute search can be a lot more intuitive. I want it to be a file system of movies where I know what to expect and how to find similar things, not something that pretends to know my preferences.

The issue is their corpus is much worse, hard to recommend good shows/movies to watch if they aren’t available.

Uber fomo Sep 17, 2018

Exactly. They only have a small subset of movies which happen to bias towards the worse ones because of business reasons. It’s not going to work if it tries to learn people’s preferences from something they are not interested in entirely.

Yes. It's based on genre and and subject. If I like Battlestar Galactica it means I like space, so it recommends lost in space. Nevermind the first is a political drama and the second a cheesy family tale.

I feel imdb recommendation is better.

Newegg fat egg OP Sep 17, 2018

Same here. I go there first then back to Netflix to do the search

Apple GtCI06 Sep 17, 2018

Yet, Prime Video recommendation are horrible... how that even possible if Amazon owns IMDb?

Oracle pnp Sep 17, 2018

See one movie and you only see recommendations of the same kind. I always have to go to 'search,' only to be disappointed that Netflix doesn't have it.

It's not possible to make everyone happy. All decisions are based on A/B tests.

Newegg fat egg OP Sep 18, 2018

If you are thinking you are doing personal recommendation, It is a job make everyone happy. Otherwise just do not do this., Basic sorting search features make most of us happy
