Does current compensation matter for the next job?

I got an interview call from Etsy for senior software engineer in New York. What should be my salary expectation? To be honest , I was oblivion to the fact that people can even get paid more than 200k in tech industry unless I came to blind. I used to think a 30-40% increase in current salary is good enough for the next job TC: 90k (Austin, Texas) Yoe: 4 years with a Master's degree. Out of those 4 years, I worked 2 years in India. Does that work experience count here in US?

The India experience doesn't really count. Not sure about TC expectations, would be surprised if it's under 200k

130-150k as total comp. maybe less. It’s mainly tech companies paying top end.

You’ll be considered a two year candidate. I think 120-140 base is a realistic range.

NY 2 years, you Could see around 170-200k. I thought Etsy was a tech company

Current comp doesn't matter unless you tell them. So don't tell them.

Current comp doesn't matter, BATNA does. If your current job is your BATNA, then your comp does matter.

It matters to your mental opportunity cost, and how willing you walk away from something you don't like.

Keep in mind it’s illegal to ask for your current comp in NYC, so they likely wouldn’t ask about it. When I got hired they were pretty upfront about the range. Base varies but most seniors I know are in the $130-$150ish range.

It’s illegal for certain states to ask about current salary. Check out this blog: https://codeoffinancy.com/2023/01/29/salary-negotiation-2/
