I have well over 15 yrs exp. Was reading lots of post regarding interview process, leet, ctci, grok. Does every interview goes through same process, even if you looking for senior director level position? Hopefully someone can help me so as i can set my preparation track.
It’s never about quantity
Agree.
I highly doubt that senior director level hires happen from the outside
Really? So if you have to get in the door, whats the right way?
You need to be known entity with existing dentil leadership
What role are you applying for, obviously if it's a senior role, you won't have to worry about leet, but more about situational & star.
I am looking for director or sr. tech mgr role..i know its kind of difficult to get straight at that level with big tech companies
Senior director would not involve a Leetcode question in FANG. Generally you level down going from smaller to larger companies. So a VP/CEX in a startup will be a Manager or director in FANG. For IC, your experience probably makes you a better general engineer. In which case you need to clear the same bar as everyone else but could start as a senior/better paid engineer (because you probably are senior/worth it) If your experience involves defining your industry I.e defining the standards/RFCs, language, top publications, etc that’s a different matter
What is IC?
Individual contributor
It’s not the years, it’s the mileage
Roger that..
SDM or SWE?
Probably SDM
What do you mean ‘probably’? Do you manage teams today? Do you write code?
That was wrong text at wrong place...
You look too confident
OP if you are senior director level guy, what are you doing here ? At that level its all connections . I am 18 yrs exp and a sr sw engg
Well are you interviewing for a director or a SWE? If for SWE then no, it only impacts your level / TC. Interviews are more or less the same, except that higher levels have more system designs in general.
The short answer: no. The interviews are all that matter. The long answer: kind of. The more experience you claim on your resume, the higher the level your interviews will be slotted for. Interviews for different levels are calibrated differently and assess for different things, both qualitatively and quantitatively. So the fact that you have 15 YOE will be used to set the level of the role you're interviewing for, which will then calibrate the interviews themselves. In that sense your experience does "matter." But that means your experience is already "priced in" to the interviews, as it were; it doesn't also add favorable consideration on top of how well you do. Therefore your experience won't generally grant an exception for poor performance in one or more rounds of the interviews.
Thank you for response. Interviews absolutely matters. But if at senior level, does interview tend more towards people skills and business acumen or still more towards coding, particularly for big tech companies? If i hv to get into one of those wats the right approach?
Interesting, this can actually work against you in that it makes it harder for you in case you're ok with getting in at a (slightly) lower level. Maybe you then need to downplay your experience.
