I have heard that once you have kids, you'd care about TC way more. That being said, if you were planning to have kids in a year and if you have this two options, what would you choose,
The startup is led by world class professor. Strong ties to a strong research university, so probably better WLB. But you never know.

Current TC: 200.

Edit: location is bay area vs college town

Wtf?? Op you have it the complete opposite... if you’re single you chase the highest TC, when you have kids you wanna be with them more and seek more of a balance

So don’t get a high end house then... you can choose between good neighborhood, high end house, or short commute... can’t have them all

No way you'll have good WLB in a startup. Also more risky. Also health insurance would probably suck, and you need that with a kid. Also low TC, for an unsure future prospect?

Startups are a young person's game, or for after you have financial Independence. With a kid, I wouldn't do it.

  • Have you ever... met a research professor before? That WLB is going to be awful

  • I figured you'd grind high TC before kids, and then settle down for a coasting high-WLB job after kids - so you have the time and flexibility to raise them
