Posted for more visibility. My nephew is graduating this fall and is interested in applying for APM roles. We have strong family connections so not fishing for referrals but trying to fish for opinions/insights. He has 4 prior internships. SWE at a well known startup, Technical PMM at F100, PM at a startup, PM at a F50. He is also a co-founder of a Y-Combinator backed startup that got incubated last winter. He’s an extremely bright kid. The biggest knock is that he went to a state school compared to his cohorts are mainly from Ivy’s, and I do in fact know how important that is. What do you guys think his chances are for APM roles at Google, Uber, LinkedIn, Salesforce, Workday, Twitter, etc.? Any insights/opinions would be greatly appreciated.
I’m in Indeed’s APM program and love it. It’s open to all backgrounds for college grads. I encourage you/your nephew to check it out.
Experience trumps education for tech companies and PM career path. So he looks golden for APM.
Esp in PM positions, they don't care about pedigree. If the person is not a fit, they are counseled out
Yes he's a strong candidate without question. If you have connections on top of all that then I see no reason he (or you) should be concerned. School should only matter in the absence of other quals which isn't the case here.
If YC, why APM?
State schools are the shit. I love that people pooh-pooh state schools. Dim witted elitists who are oblivious to where all the research dollars go. That kid sounds solid.
Your nephew has more experience than most starting PMs. Google only takes fresh grads to it's APM program, but he can try to apply to get in as a PM.
Heck yeah! He has a solid chance
I think that background looks solid. State school might be an advantage combined with good roles as it proves that the candidate is more than just a CV and shows clear drive. It can also actually help with some of the secondary diversity recruiting metrics.
Thank you for the reply! If possible, can you go a little more into detail about the secondary diversity recruiting metrics? I’ve never heard of those before.
Too many Chad's who play lacrosse, they need some people who aren't douchebags
