Accounting background. In tax tech, want to go full tech, and right now I'm just self taught. Looking to get a MCS/MSCS. Trying for GT or UIUC obviously, but if I only get in at a lesser known school such as ASU, will it really make that big a difference in getting interviews? I know once you get the interview, leetcode is all that matters, but getting to that point is my main concern right now. Figure I may get higher quality answers here vs reddit since everyone here is working and not a student.
I'd say yes, matters. And the location matters too!
It's not the "name" as such. It's how many people would even consider looking at you ATS systems send out automated first round Coding tests based on schools, previous brands, yoe etc
I never went to college. 🤷♂️
Software Engineer over Data Scientist?
Data science is alright, I mostly do data analytics right now, but my passion is building stuff with code.
Tons of people working in FAANG didnt go to or finish college. After you get your foot in the door, school doesnt really matter.
So it matters before you get your foot in the door?
Yes
Prestige helped me
Obviously it matters, but not so much. After several years, what you do, your knowledge and experience matter the most.
Obviously it doesn’t.
So It doesn't matter for the jobs at Verizon, but it does at other places.
I don't even know where my coworkers went to school, it really doesn't matter
Short answer: Yes Long answer: Prestige of school matters, yet it is only one of the many factors to get a great job or start your own company. Other factors include experience, personality, creativity, ... and so on. Really depends on where you wanna go and how far you wanna go. Most large enterprises might prefer it, you may be chosen over another if all else are parity.
Prestige is not a thing. Once you realize that, you’ll go far. Your stereotype will thank you later.
In finance and board positions it matters a lot
No it literally doesn’t
