I see a lot of people tooting their own horns. They seem to get recognized and appreciated more than the people who actually work hard. Does that attribute help? I can only think of the occurrences where I've seen it work every time. Let me state a soccer analogy that comes to mind: Even with Jose Mourinho calling himself the 'special one' really got him a lot of success and wealth. I haven't seen him perform or deliver for a long time now yet he's one of the most endeared and highly paid gaffers in the game. Add to the mix that he doesn't take up jobs at lesser known clubs such as Lyon seems to build his brand even stronger. I can't help but think that his self-praise and delusional overconfidence has had a role to play in his success. Have you guys experienced such instances in your professional careers?
I don't have a horn. Did you grown one since you were little? Or is it rather new ?
Op might be referring to male horn? 🤣
Yes. Next.
Not everyone is going to know what you’re doing or even understand what you’re doing - so if you don’t speak up you miss out on recognition. Sometimes you’ll get a manger who notice your efforts but it’s not always going to be like that. Speak up even if what you think you’re doing is trivial. If you’re a developer have more value and stock in yourself. So many devs undervalue themselves. They don’t negotiate, they don’t speak up, and then after being stuck in the same role for years start to wonder if they’re being underpaid. Sad.
In USA, yes.
OMG blah blah blah - yes duh of course. Leaders are not mind readers so obviously sharing achievements will help. Plus, “people who actually work hard” statement, really according to leadership or just a bunch of people in the corner doing random things without checking with leaders whether or not those are the right activities.
I am not talking about sharing achievements. I'm talking about underperformers getting more recognition for just talking about how great they are without delivering.
From your perspective though. You seem to see them to be underperforming but keep in mind those you say are working without them sharing the work they are just delivering silently. Just my take. Can learn from those talking and getting recognition.
Getting pathetic ManU to a 2nd place finish was not an achievement? Plus winning the Europa league? Your example is flawed
It is not the ideal example per se but it is also not flawed. Mourinho got a £20m parting gift and remember he spent £360m to build that 'pathetic' side. Even after spending that much if he couldn't win the PL, then definitely that stint wasn't a successful one. He was definitely not being paid 3X the salary of Pochettino and given access to a huge transfer kitty to win the Europa League.
He did not really get what he wanted. The problem with ManU is beyond the coaching staff.
Depends on the company culture I’d imagine. My last company was full of these fucking people, and management was too stupid to see through it. So yes, they were rewarded for it, even in cases where they were completely incompetent.
Was management not technical or themselves incompetent?
The incompetence went all the way up the chain to the top.
If you’re not going to toot it, then who is?
That's true. I always thought that putting your head down and doing a good job would be the way to go but that's not the case and you're right.
I thought so too. There’s a time for putting your head down and to be humble. And there’s times for you to highlight your awesomeness. Trick is balancing the two so you don’t come off like an arrogant snot.
