Don't want to step down

I'm looking to move away from Microsoft, but it is difficult to figure out what is seen as better. I don't think highly of msft, but there doesn't seem to be much out there that everyone agrees is better. I'm looking for stuff in Seattle. Aside from the obvious Google, Facebook, Amazon. Then probably we all agree on Lyft, Uber, Airbnb. I don't think we have linkedin, spotify, apple, Netflix in Seattle. And then, it gets complicated as you dive into Salesforce, Snapchat, Oracle, Dropbox, Ebay, Twitter, Tableau, Zillow, Redfin. Would those get seen as a step down? Any other companies I should consider?

I don’t see Dropbox is a step down.

Just to confirm this for you, Netflix does not have an engineering office in Seattle

Salesforce is not a step down. P.s I don’t work @salesforce anymore

Lol what the fuck? You guys are so caught up on titles and perception. People apply from no name companies all the time and get into "step up" companies. What is this thing about now wanting to "step down"? It's not like Microsoft is very high on that list anyways. Just how conceited are you?

Microsoft CrashOverr OP Mar 14, 2018

Don't get me wrong I think it is completely stupid. Some people say "oh microsoft" and I can't believe the shit they do here, I would say a lot of startups are way better and I would hire from there instead of msft. But sadly I don't think that's how hiring is done in most companies

Square SQ Mar 14, 2018

It's really not. I've interviewed candidates from Zoosk, Walmart labs, nameless startups that failed. If what you said was true then literally no one could be in Big N straight out of school. No one that wanted to try their own company is employable after. No one that went to a startup is employable after.

Maft might not have a good reputation in the valley but most teams have solid engineers, and then the other half of the team that is always sick or just chilling

Expedia, MSFT’s children company

Microsoft CwCJ71 Mar 15, 2018

How is Expedia Microsoft’s children company?

Apple NBD1234 Mar 15, 2018

Expedia was spun out from Microsoft years ago. They still even follow the same org structure MSFT has (dev/test/PM triad). When I was there all the interns had a t- and vendors an a- or v-.

Microsoft Fme Mar 15, 2018

It’s only a step down if you make less. Msft pay is not good compared to a lot of those companies you listed. You can even get a title bump and increase in pay from those lower companies.

Amazon DayWon Mar 15, 2018

Isn’t anything a “step up” from Microsoft? Doesn’t have a great reputation as I understand it. Very political - people don’t want to do a lot of work. The “country club” we say.

Salesforce ioioioi Mar 15, 2018

True. Microsoft used to a be good brand 10-15 years back. After a bad phase, it’s getting better but Industry doesn’t think very highly of Microsoft. I have never heard anyone say: I want to work @ Microsoft. People usually want to go to unicorn startups or FANG

*20 years back. I joined in 2004, and it was already dead then. St. Paul Graham wrote an epistle about this in 2007 that is always good to reread to get some perspective. http://www.paulgraham.com/microsoft.html

No place is a step down if your responsibility and potential impact increases. I wouldn’t focus too much on company brand, but more on future value.

Microsoft tubbyz Mar 15, 2018

"step down" should only be measured by total comp, not title.
