Hello! I joined DD around 9 months ago and left last week. I experienced that the hype about “you will grow faster at DD”, “you will learn a lot as their tech stack is cool”, “their refresher is insane” etc. All this is bullshit based on my personal experience as described below: 1. TC: AFAIK Their max E5 pay at Seattle is around 400K but other companies are paying 500K these days including Amazon, Stripe, Snap, Airbnb, Uber, Netflix etc. 400K is pretty normal to get at Meta, to some extent at Google with counter offer, Dropbox, Apple, Twitter etc. With that said DD compensation doesn’t beat most of the hot companies which any candidate would target. Even the refreshers are not that great to get what you signed for due to it’s volatile stock. You gotta compete in unhealthy environment with politics, chasers, aggressive developers running behind exceeds ratings. It might not be worth it when compared with other companies WLB. 2. WLB: Leadership commits random & immature timelines and then pressurize you to meet that. You end up working in outside office hours including weekends. You will be asked about the project status like 10 times a week across multiple meetings and then on DMs as well. There is a constant pressure that is created on you just to meet their committed timelines. In the end you will loose your healthy life and peace of mind. 3. Tech stack: There is nothing new in their tech stack and with infra team owning the scale and ops part of resources you hardly learn anything but to write bad quality code with copy pasting or using some libraries. Their code quality is pathetic and they keep on making it bad by exposing to 100s of developers working on same repository, some are writing UTs, some are writing buggy code causing your build failure. Majority of the main stack is monolithic where there is constant dependency with Tier0/1 services. I have worked in multiple FAANG companies and must say DD’s tech stack is very immature and there is a long way to go. I don’t see it improve in next 2 years at least. You don’t get time to refactor or extract out into micro services because DD is running behind quarterly GMV metrics to survive in this market and you gotta do some or the other hacky thing to increase the order volume, consumers, dashpasses etc. 4. Benefits: No office transport reimbursement, no office parking reimbursement, You gotta pay $6 to order a $9 chipotle because overall subtotal becomes $21 and $15 is off only if you order at office. Medical benefits are below par. Life insurance doesn’t even cover 2x of basic salary. No 401K match. No ESPP. 5. Career growth: Teams have more than 50% of E5s everyone chasing E6 promo and there is a good politics around ownership of projects, not great mentoring opportunities, can’t become manager before E6, as a E5 you would mostly be working all alone and may get 1-2 max developers in your project and most of the time you would be a helping resource for other E5s owned projects. ————— 8 YOE 480K Seattle Thanks! #engineering #software #swe #doordash #amazon #google #facebook
Couldn’t agree more.
Heard similar stories from my DD friends
When I looked it up, almost all SWEs were Chinese. Just an observation.
Couldn't agree more. :(
I agree with most of this. I’m most likely going to leave soon as well. At previous companies, I was able to say “no” and push back..but that hasn’t been the case at DD. The culture in engineering is pretty toxic from my experience. I basically get shamed if I suggest taking the time to do things right vs hurrying out some hacky code so my manager will look good. Same thing if I don’t work all night or on the weekend but my coworkers do.. I had high hopes for this job so it’s definitely disappointing, but there’s no point in wasting more time here. Now I’m honestly terrified to walk into a similar situation at the next place…so hopefully that can be avoided.
Have you switched to a new job, and how is your new team?
That’s what you get for working at startup. Do you expect the tech is gonna be ivory tower of greatness? No. Majority of startups tech stacks are full of duct tape. It only gets better when C team decided that it’s time to mature and brings in professionals.
That’s a thing. It’s already more than a year on IPO and now is the time when DD could have utilized mine and others skills effectively who has worked in FAANG and other stable companies before. They want to hire smart people to do shitty job. Do you think those smart people are not smart enough to leave and join somewhere they enjoy working with getting great TC at the same time?
ok, then I agree with you. They sucked
No 401k match???? Thats insane for a company of the size of DD.
Uber doesn't have 401k match either...
Never heard of any DD hype
Good for you! 👍🏻
Well, there is hype because the pay is pretty good.
Glad the interviewer never showed up to my phone screen. Thanks for sharing

Shall I hold Google stock for the next increase or sell now?
I almost hopped there from Amazon when I got an offer but opted to keep looking based off a few testimonials like yours. Sounds like it was the right choice.
