So I have got some offers and will be done with the visa etc. in about a month so I can officially resign. Is there a downside to letting my team or few key stakeholders know early on that I'm leaving so they don't have to suffer much if a project is impacted. Although I'm at a junior level right now. What I have noticed is most people even seniors, tell the teams just at two weeks mark.never understood clearly the reason for that. Can there be any repercussions?
It may impact your stock vesting.
It'll be impacted only if they fire right
Nah I let my team know for a month before. And then I basically had no task. Just come and play ping pong 🏓 🤔
You could be walked out - especially if you are going to a competitor. Also I gave a little over 3 weeks notice the last time and it was really painful the last weeks
Don’t peep a word.
Tell them the day before you tell your manager. You tell your manager, ideally, 2 weeks before your end date.
High chances of getting fired. Letting them know early will screw you up more in case if your visa is affected somehow and you need to continue at eBay.
Let me tell my story. my team (that I was leading then) get to know I am moving to a different center just a day before my last working day. I even returned my laptop before that. I worked as usual for nearly 3 months (visa processing etc). I refreshed all documents and asked my successor to Shadow me as part of mentoring program. It was a smooth transition and moral of other team members don't effected. infact no dip in the velocity. I had seen few folks who do ping pong etc and come to office just to kill time which can be a disturbance for others dont do it
Son. You are a 'resource', a line item on an spreadsheet somewhere. No need for altruism, you can be nice and gracious during your actual notice period.
It depends on who you work for. I told my manager I was looking elsewhere and he setup a couple of hours per week 1:1 to understand why and introed me to an internal team he thought was more suitable. I ended up staying, but i was given many weeks to make my decision—- I’d work for him again in a heartbeat, and I think a great manager knows that and knows to support their teams
You could get rested out early, lose your visa, etc.
Seriously they could fire me for that?
Yes I had to deal with that once. No matter how nice you try to be with team, they would never care about you, especially if manager is an asshole
