Driving UBER/Lyft during Sabbatical

Grade 7 at Intel with TC: 160K. Wife works as a contractor for FAANG and gets little bit and almost ends up losing money as they accrue vacation as they work every month and goes on loss of pay these days due to days taken off with toddler falling sick. Toddler (3yrs) old seems to be falling sick every month (cold, cough and then ultimately ends up ear infection) and with already 3 ear infections this year doc wants to put tubes in the ear to drain mucus if she gets one more. We are not OK with that as kid has to be put in anesthesia. Contemplating on getting my wife to quit her job to take care of the kid so that she can be home and not send the kid to Montessori but that puts a crunch on paying mortgage and bills. I will be taking my sabbatical to spend some time with daughter and posibly drive UBER/Lyft in the evening. To supplement my income, can i drive UBER or Lyft during my Sabbatical? I freaking work 14hrs a day taking night calls with the customer in Asia and Europe in the morning and trying to get out of Intel as there is no end in sight from a growth/pay perspective even though i have been recognized by other teams and the org i am is just political crap. Job search is going slowly (applied and they aren't picking up my resumes) and i am not a SWE and in hardware quality. Daughter is first priority and to mitigate the financial situation I can only think of UBER/Lyft for now to get supplemental income unless i find a better paying job so that my wife can quit working completely and spend time with the kid. We just cannot afford running the home with one income with me working at Intel. I am a USC and there is no issue with respect to immigration/visa stuff. Thanks for hearing out. From a Father to a lovely daughter who is also trying to be a good Husband and one going through a mid life crisis at this point.

Did u try sitting dogs via rover.com? U can work with rover or Uber etc only if u r a citizen or a gc holder... also, when kid is sick why don’t u take days off with pay? Why make wife stay at home and loose money when ur leaves are paid?

I have used most of my vacation days to take care of daughter as well. When she gets an ear infection, doc puts her on antibiotic and we don’t send her to school for almost 2 weeks. As I indicated earlier I am a US citizen.

Ur kids health will improve as she grows up... don’t make ur wife quit and leave opportunity to gain exp. for a better job in future... invest today for a profitable tomorrow... consider getting help from family...

My kid went through five ear infections this winter as well. Some kids have eaustechian tube anatomically more vulnerable to infections and there is nothing for you to prevent it. My son got sick even when he was at home during winter break as well. We ended up having a surgery as well. They put a very light anestesia and surgery took 10mins. Just a thought

I think you should do what it requires of you by the time. All i can say is that you are amazing and a very loving/caring father/hushband. All the best to you

If G7 with 160kTC in RNB then yeah that's rough and not likely doable on one income. There is no law stating you cannot drive for Uber etc on your sabbatical or even at night after work, if that's what you want/need to do. It's a 1099 contract job so have at it. Can you relocate to Folsom or Hillsboro or Chandler? That TC would go much further to support single income household. Or simply it is time to stop farting around and really ramp up job search. GL

IMHO, use your sabbatical to really spend time with your family. Intel sabbatical is paid, correct? Enjoy your time with them. Your kids will grow up quickly
