Dropbox redesign

I know it was outsourced to Collins, but interested in knowing how involved the Dropbox design team was in the redesign. How do people feel about it internally?

Not a huge fan.

Dropbox Arash Oct 4, 2017

I disliked it a lot when the color palette was first shown. I kind of like it now.

This isn’t Arash. He doesn’t capitalize any letters.

+1. Though, I don't care much for design or marketing.

Y?

It feels like a rip off of spotiftys design language

Amazon MiddleWest Oct 5, 2017

Yep. That’s because Collins did the Spotify design language and that firm has only a few styles.

DropBox has always had great product design. That’s only gotten better. And that’s internal, because I can guarantee that Collins doesn’t know shit about UX. They redesigned Chubb Insurance and didn’t even bother with a get-a-quote flow because nobody in their right minds would let them handle it. And most marketing and brand design is overrated. Doesn’t hurt to have it, it may be beneficial even, but it’s not the strongest instrument of growth.

Dropbox has not always had great product design! They’ve always had nice visual design but the UX has sucked for a looong time. And their redesign - at least the flashy marketing of their redesign - actually made me laugh out loud. Watch the ridiculous video and keep in mind that it’s files and folders we’re dealing with here. Get over yourself Collins, I mean, Dropbox.

I thought the UX was pretty good! Relatively. I was able to get things done and find my stuff. The brand stuff is a joke. Self indulgent insecure agency garbage.

I like it for the most part. My two biggest qualms are how much they used that wide + black weight of the brand font in the design site and the orange, because I’m just not that into orange.
