Just got a rejection from Dropbox after the hackerrank coding challenge. I passed 8/10 cases and 2 time outs. I was using python and I am pretty sure I optimized the code as much as python allowed me to. If I write the exact same code in Java, I am pretty sure thay it will pass all the test cases. Can someone tell me what I did wrong and how could I have done better? I spent so much time preparing for their phone interview which all seems a waste to me now. I should have been allowed to move forward to the phone interview 😢. I really like dropbox. The problem was called Autocomplete search.
I’m pretty sure if you translate your solution to Java/Rust/Go/Brainfuck as is it’ll time out as well
This. They usually calibrate the test cases such that it'll time out in any language unless you have a solution with the correct asymptotic run time.
I am skeptical about this, but I can see the reasoning behind this.
Apply somewhere else.
I have OA with Amazon pending too, but I am slightly afraid now.
What is an OA?
Its not worth joining
It doesn't matter dropbox not that great anyway :)
Since when Dropbox uses hackerrank? Interviewed with them in October, it was just phone and onsite. Never did online assessment.
I actually like Dropbox and never felt regret to join. The tech is super solid(especially a great infra) and there are lots of very strong engineers.
Timeouts are configured based on language. Your solution timed out not because you wrote Python, but because you had a suboptimal algorithm.
