how frequent? for how long? how bad? how many pages per day? how much time to get a response? what are your general thoughts on the experience?

I never hear about what non-Amazon oncalls are like.

  • I can talk about Bing from back when I worked on it. No SREs. Just Devs. 24/7 1 week rotation that repeats every 7 weeks. It was so bad peoples spouses were threatening divorce. Calls all the time. Escalations to the wrong team because the telemetry was screwed and other teams didn't know how to troubleshoot. We had lots of dependencies, which all called us for help. Some nights the calls would happen every 1-2 hours. Right in the sweet spot of 2-3am. No real sleep for 3 days in a row and I started getting delirious and and had to pass to the back up just so I could sleep. It was like this all the time. Finally the team invested in automation....lots of it. I hear it's smooth sailing now.

Do you have additional compensation for oncall? If so, how much?

One week primary, one week secondary and one week off. My team has a three person rotation but others have more. Pages are quite rare (maybe twice a month) as most issues self correct before a page is triggered. Pages getting escalated to secondary is also really rare.

Ooh man that totally sucks. Even though issues don't often escalate, not having real freedom for 2/3 of your time can't possibly be healthy. Do you have a plan to make that better? Or are you not really on the hook for fast response, and can wait until your show at the theater ends?

Company #1: Weekly shifts, 10 pages / week, got it down to 1 page / week.
Company #2: Three day shifts, a fire every few days.
