AWS vs Slalom offer - SA vs ProServ

Sep 7, 2020 20 Comments

Currently juggling 2 offers, thinking of moving from a major bank to a new role. AWS Cloud roles.
Experience: Solution Architect / DevOps Engineer (50/50 split between architecture & coding)
YOE: 4
Location: Canada

Offer 1 - AWS - Solution Architect Associate (pre-sales SA)
Base / Bonus: 105k
RSU: 41
Vacation: 3 weeks
Travel: 25%

Offer 2 - Slalom - DevOps Engineer (post-sales Professional Services)
Base: 130k
Vacation: 4 weeks
Travel: 10%, 90% Remote
Bonus: 10%

WLB is fairly similar, although AWS might be worse. Slalom is a decent sized boutique consulting firm around AWS, GCP Cloud technology. I'd get a ton of exposure at Slalom and use new technologies, meet clients for initial engagements, then return home and work through the client projects. AWS on the other hand, brand name, more travel and pre-sales SA. #offer #aws #amazon #solutionarchitect #devops

Future opportunities - both roles move into Faang or top tier companies. Slalom has been poached into Nvidia, Google, AWS etc and AWS has movement to other Faangs / companies.

Appreciate any thoughts! My main concern is working in boutique consulting, however, i've talked to many past employees and they enjoyed the work and exposure to many client engagements.

  • Keep in mind that Slalom is a management consulting co (management being the key word there), so you will get pushed around and pressured on tech projects by MBAs with little to no tech experience and an absent moral compass.

  • Here’s the truth. If you left Amazon for Slalom you boss and the customer presales people (solution principal or whatever made up word they’re using now) would describe you to clients as a really talented “former Amazon engineer”. If you left Slalom for Amazon no one would think to mention the no name firm you came from. If you don’t have a FAANG stamp on your resume yet it’s worth getting one just to have it.

    • Yeah, if you had read the post, I was considering the 2 offers. What i ended up taking was Slalom back then and have never looked back! Honestly, it was probably the right decision as the exposure to cloud agnostic tooling and software was my main focus which I wouldn't have gotten in a traditional SA (associate) role at AWS. Faang might be in the cards down the line, but currently i see myself moving from DevOps consulting to a product / SaaS position in the future. Something where i see the fruits of my labor end to end. The tech consulting was gap fill to ramp up my exposure to multiple technologies and stacks in a quick amount of time

I'm a proserve consultant. Its project dependent, not team nor org dependent. But in general its all billable hours anyway so if you have bad WLB its either your EM is shitty at project management or you dont know how to manage your own workload. Also we have SAs going in/out of our org all the time.

    Location of the aws offer?

If you're interested in cloud, AWS has a much better brand name than Slalom.
