Is L5 really where most people retire?

I have 3.5 YOE and I'm getting to L5 this cycle. Have heard that this is a terminal position and promotions become much more gradual after this, if at all. Is this true? Find it hard to fathom that this is possibly end of the road.

L5 to L6 is a difficult political journey; most people donโ€™t make this transition within a single company. Itโ€™s much more common to take your experience and move to a startup/small company as a director of engineering/VP. Success here paves a good path to L6+.

Itโ€™s one of those interesting issues where most developed companies have all the L6s doing the L6 scope work so finding opportunities as an L5 for L6 scope is not straight forward. That scope is much easier to find at a company where youโ€™re at the top from the start and just need to demonstrate you can execute

I got my first promo process started at 10 months exp and got the official transition at 12 months to the date of my joining. Tried at the 3 YOE point for L5 but was told to wait until now

Sounds kinda strange to say it but yes, I haven't got a bad review yet. Only things I need to work on to get to the next level. I guess my managers have been nice and supportive that way
