Among the few hosts who have received a payment from Airbnb is Thierry Rignol, who has about 80 Airbnb listings across Houston, Dallas, Denver, Seattle and Portland, Oregon.ย

After Airbnb changed its cancellation policy, Rignol says he lost more than $30,500 through 50 reservation cancellations.ย

"It was a bloodbath," Rignol said.ย

Inst it crazy that guy has 80 houses on Airbnb. Is crazy that Airbnb is converting houses to hotels in an industrial scale but for PR they keep saying our hosts are teachers who are renting out their spare rooms.

It's a huge scam and Airbnb should be regulated a lot more than they currently are

You know I don't get it, does airbnb really bring in more money then regular rental tenants?
I mean you get higher daily pay, but you have to pay for cleaners everytime, airbnb gets a cut, and you have lots of downtime on the property.

It does. Some cities (SF) protects regular tenants right far greater than owner's. Airbnb removes that problem.

If your property is in a good neighborhood, there is no downtime.

  • Not understanding why Airbnb would give any money to hosts? Is uber giving money to drivers too?

    • They aren't, I'm not sure why you think they are? The point of the article was that they said they would but aren't in reality because again they are a platform and not a charity.

      Supply and demand.

There are millions of cars on the road and with historic unemployment highs, there will be no shortage of people diving into the gig economy. All anyone need is a car.

Airbnb hosts on the other side.. you can't just buy a house, decorate it and put it on Airbnb. There is less supply here. The company needs to keep it's hosts happy so they will not withdraw from Airbnb altogether, killing the company in the process. I am not aware of the exact payments but Airbnb has a lot more to lose if hosts withdraw from the platform

How is Airbnb even able to legally change the cancellation policy? Itโ€™s a contract agreed to between the host and the customer.

Theyโ€™re just asking to be sued.

Airbnb should only be legal for spare rooms in the primary residence of an owner. That's it.

You're right. In fact, most cities already have laws and restrictions against renting out a place if you are also not residing there.

But if this host with 80 listings who is brazenly demanding relief is any indication, these restrictions are hard to enforce for municipal governments.

This also goes to show how the typical host isn't someone who is trying to make ends meet, but an opportunist who operates hotels using residential property. Not too dissimilar from people who buy up all the TP in the grocery store.

  • AirBnB super hosts are toast. Lots of them pay mortgages with AirBnB rents. Now theyโ€™re all struggling.

Airhosts forum is depressing to read.
