Dear Blinders,

I recently went through FB E6 loop for their London office and wanted to share my experience for people who might be pursuing similar loops.

1. Initial phone screen was less than perfect; I could only solve 1 medium question in ~40mins.
2. Follow up phone screen was fine. Did 1 hard followed by 1 medium.
3. Virtual Onsite coding round 1 was fine. Did a medium variant of a hard followed by a popular medium.
4. Virtual Onsite behaviour round - I underestimated and underprepared for this one. My stories were real, but I think the interviewer was keen on hearing how well I am leading people and making product impacting decisions and resolving deep seated conflicts on a daily basis. I mean, I think I am a pretty solid tech lead in my current role but I could not articulate my stories well. I wasn't sure how I performed in this round and it came back to haunt me.
5. Virtual Onsite coding round 2 - Did 1 medium perfect but got stuck on an edge case in the 2nd medium. Damn, I had seen similar question before but I was so fried by that time I couldn't figure out until interviewer dropped the hint.
6. Virtual Onsite design round 1 - went really well.
7. Virtual Onsite design round 2 - went really well.

Recruiter came back saying that there were gaps in the behaviour and coding so a follow up round is needed.

Follow up behaviour + coding round - I messed up my stories again! Damn, it felt so stupid, but it just felt so tricky answering those questions. I wish I had done a few mocks for that. Damn. Coding was 1 medium and it went fine.

Final result - rejected during candidate review owing to lack of E6 signals in behaviour rounds. My key takeaways from this experience has been to thoroughly prepare for the behaviour rounds. Also, speed and accuracy in coding rounds is crucial for FB, specially for E5 and below (had my coding rounds been all perfect, I would have gotten an E5, as told me by the recruiter).

Your recruiter is 100% right. For E6 behavioral is super important. And they dont care much about coding. However if your coding and design both are good then you would have gotten E5 definitely.

I suggest watching this before giving behavioral round.

  • I coach candidates once in a while and cannot stress on the importance of behavioral rounds... At least 1 in 5 rejects are because of that.
Feel free to book a mock or read up more on the blogs at stackinterview.com..

I'd always kept reading DSA books by Tanenbaum and Mark Allen Weiss throughout my work life. LC is all about practice and application of the theoretical concepts. I did ~350 but still always feel likely to get stuck in an interview setting.
