Hi all, I am seeking for Career Advice please. YOE: 9 TC: USD110k. Sorry for the long read Link to detailed Work Experience and TC details - https://ibb.co/vc1P02z Component 1. Finance background: education + internships in Investment Banking (M&A) and Private Equity. Component 2. Joined Rocket Internet on Global Venture Development rotational program, reached MD position Component 3. Opened 4 businesses (2 of my own, 2 for someone else) with mixed results in Southeast Asia and then London. I have recently been fired (unfairly or fairly, who cares) and I am now job-hunting again. Problem: I am so f%cking poor, no social status whatsoever. I want to settle down, take less risk (now), have predictable life. I am interested in cash and some social status. Thoughts: - Do not give up, more sports and positive vibes, less bad habits, keep your sanity β itβs not the end yet - Stay in London, London is worse than US ($) but still the best in EU (married now, not ready to move) - Stop working in Tier-2, Tier-3 Startups: risk is too high, cash is low, chances of seeing equity are low - Stop working 996 for little money, no one cares, you are burning yourself β or do it for more cash - Do not launch startups when you are in debt - take a rest, restore financial position - Stop jumping places, settle down, get the taste of normal life, treat yourself well, prioritize personal gains - Look for publicly traded or reputable firms with understandable bonus and predictable equity vesting Question: which career options are available for me? 1) Big Tech: go for PM roles with FAANG or other Big Tech and then go to FAANG 2) Consulting: sell e-commerce and online food expertise, go to top 5 consulting firms 3) Venture Capital: sell foundation in finance, e-commerce and online food expertise and own startup experience 4) β¦? Thanks! #tech #career #careeradvice
I feel you have start up experience but you worked for underfunded startups. Your best bet would be to find work in a well funded startup (more of a scale up). Given your background in product and finance, TransferWise, Monzo and Curve come to mind and they are based in London. TransferWise seems to care about people with start up experience. You could also look at enterprise software companies like Databricks, HashiCorp and Thoughtspot and work in enterprise sales. And don't worry about job titles and social status. Most people who have these don't have the courage to start something on their own and take any sort of risk. You started a few businesses and even if they didn't work you learned something from them. Once you have some more cash from the new jobs, take another stab at it. Wish you all the very best!
Nice to see a detailed & well articulated response. Thank you!
Thanks, appreciate it. Problem with startups in my view is that you have to wait for the liquidity event that might never happen: sale, ipo, permission to sell on secondary markets. And you depend so much on the founders and their good will. I have seen 2 examples at least: some co-founders in Zalora have vested their shares and... Got usd17k at the ipo of GFG. Maybe it's different in the UK with the rule of law prevailing π€ Will definitely give it another try at building startups, I read that the median age for successful entrepreneur is 37 and 3d attempt hehe
