EMBA good for career growth?

Nov 26, 2019 15 Comments

Hey all, so i am almost 40 and currently working as a senior software engineer. My boss is potentially allowing me to pursue an executive MBA. It will be self financed but the company will give sponsorship letter and all the leaves needed to pursue the program (its like 2 weekends a month travel to college). But i am totally confused whether to do this. Is it really worth it? How can my career diverge after completing EMBA? Any experiences? What will my salary after doing Executive MBA? What is the job market like in FANG companies for mid level MBA graduates? Current TC is 140k and i am based in midwest

If you are not in management you won't get in to a top program.
You don't need an emba to get into management. Your manager needs to help you build a plan to grow into one.
There are plenty of companies that will pay for your emba if you get in.

Why isn't your manager working with you to transition to a management role? Shouldn't this be part of your growth plan? Would definitely be more edifying and cheaper than an EMBA.

I would say I've seen many successful managers without an MBA degree. I have also seen MBAs end up not doing management ... In other words, it's not a guarantee that you'll find a management role with the MBA. Sure it definitely helps but no guarantee

As for EMBA which is usually a shorter program, it's really for those who are already in management and need that piece of recognition to get promoted in a big company... And it's usually sponsored by the company.

So like many have said here, the ROI on an EMBA is not very clear.

EMBA is quite expensive. If your employer isn’t paying for it, it is absolutely not worth the money.

You should be ashamed to call yourself a senior SW engineer with that 140k TC. I’m not in SW and make much more than that working for chipzilla.
I don’t mean to be rude - tell your boss you’re pursuing that mba and LC instead. You’d be 200k richer and end up with a much higher TC

    • What the f is wrong with you? What is the shame in making less money? I know what Intel pays. You don’t work for FANG buddy..

Executive MBA is useless unless you are already in management.

What are your career goals? And why do you think EMBA will help you?

I want to jump into management. Don’t want to do coding 5-10 years down the line

I am not sure if EMBA would help. You should work with your manager to make that switch.

  • Here are few things to consider: 1. Likely after your MBA you will have to start at junior level at any business roles you want to target (if that is your goal) 2. Target top 10 schools as network and brand name carriers a lot of weight 3. MBA as an education degree has lost its value esp with the advent of tech boom ( even HBS and UPenn are struggling to get FT students) 4. Consider trying your hand at building a startup of own by reading books and engaging in the local startup ecosystem. Will likely yield more experience than doing a MBA

I am preparing my case for sponsorship for an EMBA and imo it's a great opportunity. That said it's about $200k+ if you go to a top school (which you should). Try and think if you want to take that kinda debt at 40. I m definitely not willing to take that on that kind of debt. I'd also chart next steps after the EMBA. If this all makes sense, the time investment is absolutely worth it.
