TC Google Durham NC

Aug 28, 2021 18 Comments

I’m thinking of applying for a SWE III (L4) at Google in Durham (Google Cloud Hub).
There’s not a lot of data on levels fyi, do any of you know whether my salary expectation is realistic?

Expected base: $120k - $130k
Expected TC: $180K

Current TC: $150k
YOE: 9

I’m an Engineering Manager in the embedded software space.
Don’t have a lot of domain knowledge for the Google job but want to switch for more interesting/current tech and better career opportunities.
I’m willing to take these two steps down as long as I can still fulfill my financial responsibilities.
Don’t mind the move back to IC because I love hands on coding and engineering.

Any general feedback welcome as well :-)

Lowering level won't get you into Google. Apply for any Google role you are interested and see how far you can progress

There are lot more than just system design to get pass Google interview. Less than 1% applicants get into Google. 60 percent current hires failed at least one prior interview.

It will become harder to get into lower levels because they would look at 9yoe and say this person is not advancing enough so they must not be good

Durham refreshers are 75% the rest of the US, base is 75% of the bay area, and there is also pressure to only hire at lower levels and comp. It is our "discount" employee location. That base is close to top of band for L4 at RDU, they might go a little higher on stock.

I expect the default offer will be around 110k base 160k gsu 180 tc, "top" 140k base 240k gsu 240 tc.

Your base should be 75% of a bay area base according to the internal tool. I think they're discounting RDU too much tbh. Should be a 15% cut.

The base and TC should be easily doable. FYI, there are a few recent L3/L4 data points on Levels. I recently joined the Durham office as an L3, so PM if you any have questions.

Wtf would you be happy to try l4 ic from 9yoe eng eng manager. You should have more confidence in yourself and push yourself to try l6 eng manager, then be unhappy with a down level to l5 if it happens.

    • Fair enough. I think my lack of confidence is coming from the fact that I spent my career so far in automotive/heavy machinery software so I feel like tech is a big move.
