Pursuing Masters in CS in US for 2022. Worth it?

Feb 2, 2021 20 Comments

Hello community,

I completed my B.tech Mechanical in 2020.
During my final year project I had to go through lots of CS concepts in developing a routing algorithm for GE company. I want to explore more in that field. So
I thought of pursuing my masters in CS in USA.
Since I am a fresher I had so many things going on my mind. So I am approaching the community for suggestions.

1) I want to know whether is it totally worth going for it.

2) Since I am changing my branch from mechanical to CS will that effect my chance in getting admissions or while job search after Masters

3) I can't afford the whole amount for Masters so I need to take the loan. How many years will that take (approx) to clear that.

4) Or Is it better to stay in the present company and switch after gaining experience.( I was allotted to a support project and there are no new learnings. It is mostly mundane work)

YOE : fresher

If you’re gonna pursue a masters in America, please don’t do it from some bullshit no name school. The ones that choose to go this route are the ones who struggle to find opportunities. You need to be in a top 5 CS program or you’re probably better off in India

The drawback of going for IVY' s and other top private institutions is it will cost heck amount of money roughly ($60 -$70k) at least. If anything goes wrong students will end up in debts

Even if for some reason, they have to go back to India, the MIT/Berkeley/CMU brand has international brand recognition. UCincinatti doesn’t.

Former Mech. E who pursued the MS in CS and Fairly happy with my career now. However, the transition was an uphill battle.
    My advise...
Before starting MS do some free cheap online class in CS fundamentals and see if you really like CS and IF you're able to handle the rigorous coursework that you will face.

    1. if you are just going to do masters in usa then come back to India then it's useless. most people do masters in usa only for getting job there

Well I don't think that's the case. Most of relatives didn't have H1B but they have been living there for years. But they are applying for Visa for every three years i guess

not really. they must have a visa to Live there. one of my friend didn't get h1b all the three times and so came to India after opt expired. your relatives must be on some visa to Live and work there. they must be on L1 visa ig

Why not pursue a Master's part time while working in India.
