Curious to know what other people think and why. What's more important earlier in your career: being surrounded by the best team or having a lot of opportunities for scope to increase? (Basically would you choose learning through having great mentors around you or learning through doing and why)

  • You should have both.

Agreed, both are important. If one had to be absent, I think mentorship would be more important. You can always take the initiative to work on more things.

    • For context I had a mentor when I joined the team but he got all the high impact, visible projects. I got an idea of good dev practices through them but had the chance to grow as en engineer by taking those learnings and building the same things myself when he switched teams

I think having a mentor is more important. They get to know how you work, can introduce you to other people, and help you out in the future.

@op you can always express that you are hoping for someone to be a mentor to you (if you're interviewing). Maybe someone at Senior level who would be willing to. Or take a course and develop that mentorship with your professor.
