I have heard that it is easy for women to get hired in the tech industry? Any time one of my female friends got hired, everyone jumped to a quick conclsion that she got hired because she is a woman. How true do you think it is?

What do you think when you see 3yoe staff engineer
"everyone" is sexist
There are a lot of women out there, so i dont think someone gets hired just because she is a woman. But yes, they get hired relatively easier than the guys and the reason is gender inequality in tech. I know a couple of years ago Intel said they would hire 4 girls and 1 guy on an average to maintain the gender balance. (Source: intel recruiters) My female friend only said that she feels she gets the benefit of being a female at the interviews.
I wouldn’t generalize to women in general. Rather, women have the opportunities to get more easily hired through diversity programs. I had one female friend who got a SWE role and another female friend who got a PM role (both positions were for Apple) without interviewing (they just talked their way with the recruiters). This happened at the Grace Hopper Celebration. So just because women have the opportunity to get hired more easily doesn’t mean that all women actually got hired for those reasons.
I’d kill for a solid female SWE or Data Engineer on my team right now. We are working with big enough data that I worry unknown biases in my team’s thought processes might affect our product and results. All else being equal (this is the important part), I want diversity of lived experience on our data analytics/data science team. I’m saying this as a non SJW white dude, by the way - not trying to trigger anyone by saying I’d like to find a super competent female engineer.
maybe look into the five factor personality model then a lot of the times when people say they want “diversity” they mean in terms of personality traits, not actual races
If it was so easy, there wouldn’t be a gender imbalance from the qualified applicant pool. There are efforts to increase female candidates in the funnel, but the hiring process is the same. To do otherwise would be unlawful. It sounds like your everyones are somewhat naive of the actual hiring process.
If two candidates have a similar resume. The female is chosen. So, yes, there is an advantage in that sense, but the female still has to have decent qualifications compared to the general pool of candidates.
True!
In this thread a bunch of people with zero data making up anecdotal conclusions. 🍿
And also interviewers tend to interpret differently when there is a female candidate and ask easier questions. I faced it personally in one of the hiring events where female engineers were not asked system Design 🤷♂️
My team interviewed 5 candidates for a position. Only one of them was a girl. She performed the poorest among all the candidates. I was in the interview panel. My Director still hired her saying that we need more females in our org..
