Hi everyone! I recently got a job at Apple, and I’ll be starting full time in the summer. I’m 22 years old, and I’ve lived in an east coast suburbia my entire life. I really want to live in a big city at some point, and SF seems like it would be fun but I really don’t know much about it. Living in SF would also include a 2 hour commute every day to Cupertino once things are no longer virtual but I want to live somewhere that has a good population of younger people. I was wondering if people who are from SF/Bay Area could provide any advice on what I should do.

SF is bad man. Crowded and dirty. Full of homeless. Shitty traffic.

  • South Bay sucks, but commute from the city is brutal. I would live in South Bay and go to SF on weekends. Odds are: you won't do much after the regular work day anyway.

Live in the city for at least 1-2 years. Apple has shuttle that come and pick you up.

Shuttle picks up all over the city, busier lines have more time options for busses than others. If you already have an offer you can email the recruiter or whoever and ask them if they can give you a copy of the schedule to help you decide where to live

Why not Palo Alto? It has the campus life.

Most people living in SF who work at Apple live in the south side of the city to lessen the commute, mostly either Noe Valley or Mission. Mission is livelier, Noe is quieter and a bit safer but both neighborhoods are walking distance of either.

It can take anywhere from 50-90 min one way from those neighborhoods depending on when you leave (unless there’s a bad accident or something). Since Apple is centered in Cupertino, the shuttle takes HWY 280 which is much less traffic than the 101 (other tech companies)

since you’re 22 and lived in the suburbs your life I would recommend trying out living in SF for a year. If you hate it you can always move to the South Bay (although I guess you could do the opposite as well)
