AWS job offer and salary negotiation question

Oct 18, 2021 3 Comments

I just received an offer to be a data center technician at AWS. I am a career changer and this would be my first full time IT related job. The offer is for $28.85 an hour which comes out to $60k a year. On Glassdoor I see salary postings averaging $35 an hour.

Is it possible to negotiate a higher hourly rate with AWS for this type of position? I really want this job and excited for the growth potential. I'm taking a pay cut to realize this opportunity and just looking to lessen the blow any bit that I can. #salarynegotiation #amazonaws #amazon

  • Location? My base as a DC tech was 60k 6 years ago and I only had 2 years of experience. I wasn't even an fte either just a vendor on a managed service. Seems kind of low for 2021. If it's their first offer it's a no brainer to ask for more.

Also in my experience there was no room for advancement as a DC tech. You really have to learn networking or programming to get decent money. Otherwise, you're waiting for your DC manager to retire then your company skips over you for an outside hire. I don't want to discourage you as I wouldn't have the TC I have now without that experience. There just isn't much career progression beyond getting your foot in the door and access to a playground to learn.

    • The position is in Umatilla, Oregon. I have a few certs and a degree but haven't worked in IT full time yet. I'm currently pursuing the CCNA in addition to learning programming. I'm interested in either pursuing network or cloud engineering as my next step.

I've struggled to get any type of interview for entry level IT jobs in the Seattle market. This seems much better than pursuing help desk. So I'm excited for the job but I'm open to many things in the future.

Do you think with my own self study and diligent work ethic that I would be able to move into something more advanced in the near future with this job?

    • Yeah DC is better than help desk and youll get to play with a lot of toys that you wouldn't otherwise. Yes, absolutely that type of person that could take advantage of such a situation. It will be a good stepping stone but I'd be surprised if you were satisfied with relying on promotions to advance your career. I was much the same and went the more programming centric route.
