Hello Community, after long search I got a new job recently. On very first day of joining, the employer breaks what they promised. Like they promised I will be leading team but on first day I was told ‘no team at this moment’, we will hire later and no direct report. Secondly they promised me during interview saying no one is principal level eventhough I cracked the principal level but now I see so many Principal Engg. Lastly they promised to move to south bay, but canceled that too. Due to limit companies during interview, I accepted the offer little better than my previous one but not that great. Now can I apply in other companies? will I be rejected as its been only 10 days? i love an open position about a role at Uber, how should i navigate through this as its been only 10 days? is it good time now to join UBER after recent layoffs?
If it is not written contract, it is a lie. Things won't get better. Find another job.
TC or gtfo
Is this Uber? Why mention them?
No, I found one job I am passionate about at Uber, which I would like to join
You need to have what I call the “blue shirt vs. red shirt” conversation. You sit down with the manager and calmly review that you thought they had offered you a blue shirt (South Bay commute, managing a team) and it seems they have given you a red shirt (no team, different location, title not quite at parity with peers). You should reiterate that you were excited about the potential for a blue shirt. And you should calmly, blandly ask: Did I misunderstand what sort of shirt you were offering, or did the shirt change? Is there an opportunity to get a blue shirt? If not now, can I check back in with you in 90 days on the availability of the blue shirt? This conversation serves a few purposes. It clearly communicates your expectations for the job and your awareness that there was a bait-and-switch. But it also should take the emotion out of it, by treating the promise and the reality as equivalent options (blue vs. red). You don’t feel that way, of course, but it is helpful to act that way in order to get honest answers.
I had and was told that it’s organization decision. When asked about PRINCIPAL engineers, was told we bring people at level we know they are expert so they can be promoted.
What's your title according to your offer letter?
I wouldn’t worry about 10 days or not. You should apply and interview. First do the above blue-red talk!! That makes perfect sense.
What would I say if asked why leaving a job in 10 days?
Don’t put it on your resume or LinkedIn
I have had this happen in my prev job and my current one too. Whenever I tried to have the talk with my manager in prev company, he said we are assigning as per the requirements and in my current company manager sometimes says things are out of his hands. Also I was assigned low position saying we follow horizontal hierarchy so everyone is a software engineer, but then later I did see senior software engineer positions around. I made a mistake of sticking in my prev company for too long. Just keep prepping and interviewing until you find something of your interest.
Sounds hasty. I'd sit down with my manager and talk it out. Sounds like some miscommunication. If you think you're a principal, you shouldn't have to be told this.
