If I ran my familys company for a few years, and the business is under my name, how does my new employer check my employment history? I never thought about the start/end dates until now.. Also, if I have a company on paper, should I disclose it? I thought about starting a small shop but decided not to go through with it. Now its just a company on paper with no conflict of interest to my new employer.
Are you the only employee in your family’s company? If not, give your new employer a name and number to call for employment history, but make sure that person understands what information is authorized for release. Most employers know what they can and can not ask, but many don’t, and will ask about your salary, work performance, health, etc. If you went through the steps to file for a company but never actually opened for business, then you don’t need to disclose it.
No I have employees who I work with so if needed my new employer can def call them. I filed for a new company, but I have no clients or anything because I decide to not go through with it. The only thing is that the new companys industry is listed as the same industry as my new employer.. Not sure what the approval process is for this situation. I absolutely can just dissolve it, but if I can sign whatever form they want me to before the start of my employment to make sure I am “safe”, I def prefer that because its easier.
Sounds good. If your employer has a “non-compete clause” they want you to sign, and you don’t care one way or the other, then that works. But I would be cautious about companies that worried about near term competition from a company that’s net even open for business. I’ve helped my associates start their own companies in our field, and it has never come back to our detriment, probably because we almost always team to deliver the wide array of services our clients require.
Disclose. Always. If you decide to start something later they'll say you've been working on it the whole time
