I’m a data scientist who drank the industry kool aid about how great the data science field is and now I need to get out. I have python scripting experience but very little Leetcode and I need to switch to an SWE/MLE role by Feb end next year. I’m not targetting FAANG engineering jobs as of yet since I know I’m not at that level yet. What are other companies I can target to get a foot in the door for MLE positions? 4 yoe TC - 90k
Totally relatable. Data scientist here with low pay and this field sucks. Shouldn't have pursued this. I want to move to swe ml. Pm me if you want to discuss/prepare together.
I am PMing too :)
are you working at Jet or something? ya f that
I feel there are high paying data scientist and swe as well as low paying ones..all depends on your skills and how smart you are..if you’re doing the move just for money do you feel like you’re top 5%? Top10%? If you’re not then don’t even expect 200k tc even as a swe..the effort might not serve your purpose
Yes, I get your point. But I think the data scientists who are getting well paid are those with a PhD in ML or of same skill set. And as a masters graduate, I think I have a better chance of getting a bigger salary as a SWE/MLE.
Good MLE roles will go to PhD ML grads who weren't good enough for industry RS roles. If you only have a Master's, you still will make 90K as MLE. Let's say there are 5 PhD ML new grads each year from each school who didn't make it to RS or academia. Take the top 100 schools. You're still looking at 500 fresh PhD ML grads each year gunning for MLE roles.
May I ask what you dislike about it? I am an engineer thinking of getting a master's in data science.
If you don’t have a PhD, the chances of you earning big in top tech companies as a DS is slim to none. Better get an MS in CS, grind leetcode and get into SWE.
Agree with OP more than 100%. In big companies that pay well, you will be restricted to data analyst type jobs (no matter what the title is). The good work and high pay goes to PhD holders.
Please tell us how. I am in the same situation, would live you insights
Take a lot of python dev projects in your workplace.Do you have the opportunity to do so?Python development should be an easy transition. Anything which requires SQL automation try to script with Python. You will need a flexible boss.
What’s your take on ml product / program manager job prospects?
I'm a first year SQL monkey and I'm considering the same thing. Should I learn more technical (pivot to data engineer, potentially SWE) or analytics (hop around companies then climb corporate ladder)? 1 yoe 80k tc
If you want to stay in analytics, move to the management as quickly as possible. If you want to stay IC, move DE or swe

“Data scientist” with 90K TC? You sound more like a data analyst
same thing.
Not outside of Facebook my friend :) Data Scientists are not product analysts at Uber.
