I am at E5 level at FB and considering a move later this year to an IC 5 role at another company. What is the entry level engineering management role. Is it possible for an IC 5 Eng at Uber to become a manager ? How does the transition work ? Looking for data for FANG, Uber, Lyft, Airbnb
L5 is the same as M0. it is a horizontal move and is possible. without any management experience you would likely need to be at the company for a bit before making that move. even if you are hired to specifically be a manager we make you do a 6mo stint as an IC.
Got it. Thanks! How frequent is the L5 -> M0 transition for people who want to make that move. For context, in some orgs at FB, there is now an unofficial rule to discourage L5-> M0 transitions. You first need to get to E6 before you can move to M1.
AFAIK we actually stopped hiring M0 externally. So as long as the team is growing we will need more managers and mobility is easy.
Why the obsession with being managers? For data point Uber only hires M2 from outside, and promotes within to be M1
Not obsessed. Just want to be aware. Is there a M0 at uber ? What is the equivalent IC level for M1 ?
You would most likely not be hired as Engineering Manager at Netflix if you had no previous Engineering management experience. Pay is typically a good margin above Sr. Engineering positions.
Yeah. I understand that. Edited that post to clarify. What does the Eng to Management transition/promo look like at Netflix ?
It’s relatively common from what I have seen over the years. Typically the engineer on the team that shows strong leadership and partners well with other teams has a good shot to become a manager if the team grows or another management opportunity comes up. There is no predefined track towards becoming a manager though.
I don’t know what an IC 5 means, since Netflix does not have any levels. I’ve never seen an engineer with less than 10 years experience become a manager.
Why don’t you start with your comp details at E5 and years of experience? That incredibly increases view count and attracts right people to answer your real question.
