At Amazon, there's a policy in place around game development. It says that they have full rights to what you make, and that you can't collaborate with anyone on any games, even for like a game jam. Does Epic have something similar? I understand the first part, but not being able to participate in game jams in my time at Amazon has been depressing. I want to be able to collaborate with people again, even if it's not for money.
Unity is the only Game Dev company that doesn't claim IP.
Yeah, tons of Unity folks I know work on side projects. The difference is Epic is a game studio, Unity is a technology company. Your side project competes with Epic.
The official line from HR is that anything employees learn from side projects/Open source/indie Dev - makes them better engineers at Unity. No point telling engineers they can't pursue side projects because they'll either: A) pursue them anyway B) fail to maintain a knowledge in tech outside of their team
Unity worker here. Doing commissions and own publications on free time.
Basically every company has this. You can't make potentially competing IP as an employee.
Yeah, I probably shouldn't have even mentioned the IP ownership part. I just wanna do game jams again.
At ATVI I dont think it's this restrictive. If you have a personal project you have to disclose it and they want to have first right of refusal but that's the extend of it. I'd need to ask around about game jams but dont think that holds any water in court
Lol yeah good luck with ATVI legal 👏👏👏
Battat is right. We have people who have done game jams before.
2K is like this. I believe MZ is too.
I mean, this is honestly boiler plate stuff that is either illegal or unenforced. I know people working at twitch, that have built and sold their own video games, and Amazon never cared.
There are no restrictions on outside collaboration at Blizzard as long as it doesn’t use Blizzard IP, is worked on outside work hours, and doesn’t use any Blizzard resources. In fact, I think Game Jam 6 is about to begin soon.
So is Nintendo
EA has a 4 or 5 year old thread (still going) complaining about our policy.

Half of Google employees and prolly also Apple Amazon Meta don’t do any work…
Perhaps take your employment contract to a lawyer to verify this. That sounds ridiculous.
I'm leaving Amazon for other reasons regardless. I'll leave it to the next guy to take this to court.
