Hi, I'm a new grad with two offers at the moment. Which one do you think is better? Epic: $110K base, $10K relocation Target: $85K base, $5K bonus I have to move for Epic but not for Target. #target #epic EDIT: Target is at least temporarily WFH. My main concern is career growth, learning, and future prospects, so I'm definitely willing to forego TC in the short term if it makes me a better engineer/candidate in the mid to long term.
If target is wfh; that’s a huge bonus and worth the TC drop.
Target is at least temporarily WFH, I think it's indeterminate how long that will last because of the pandemic but of course, Epic is not WFH.
Make sure to know which team in epic. Some team has legacy codes as well as a very old programming language and not sure if that would help you on career development
MyChart team
MyChart has web & mobile development, which sounded interesting to me. Technically, I think I can still negotiate team placement. What team would be the best for career progression? I would have thought MyChart would be good, seeing as it's a well-known product and seems to work with a modern tech stack. How much worse would Target be in terms of career progression?
Very good to know. You would say Epic definitely looks better on a resume than Target? I'm thinking MyChart might be the place to be for me, then. If I can learn a lot a bounce after about a year to something better, that's really what I'm after. I can handle dogshit WLB if it means I'm really growing and learning a lot of valuable stuff.
Which team you’re on at Target makes a big difference in terms of impact and scale.
What would the best teams be?
Depending on what you like really. I personally think digital and mobile teams are good places to learn something that’s on demand.
You’ll work far more hours at Epic. If WLB matters to you, Target is the better choice.
WLB matters to me for sure, but not necessarily in the short term. If working hellish hours at Epic is what it takes to become a really strong engineer/candidate moving forward, that is something I would definitely consider.
