Anyone move from amazon/google/apple to or from Epic systems. How does company culture compare to AT&T or Facebook/google/microsoft or Amazon (i heard amazon works you much harder with much less comfort). whats working at epic like ? the offices seem all fun and whacky, is it awesome? (is pay even close to the same, what is expected for entry level SDE?)
Why would you want to move to Madison
It's probably very cheap.
I choose epic system over amazon
I don't think anyone will ever make that move unless it's a very senior position with lots of $$
First thing I would ask - your current location, YOE, and how much you make. That helps answering if the moves makes sense based on Madison's COL. You will not receive very high salary like at the companies you quoted, but it is not bad for Madison cost of living. First couple years will be tough/strenuous until you put down the roots in your team but after that, WLB will be very good.
I also heard that their campus is amazing.
It's not awesome. It's not fun or wacky. You'll work long hours in incredible isolation and use outdated tech that doesn't exist anywhere else in the industry. Epic will become a stain on your resume when you inevitably try to leave. Good luck.
Wait really like how legit should I take this. I’ve heard from some that epic uses outdated stuff but I thought in general they were pretty awesome. “Stain” on your resume like it has very little value when compared to other companies?
Everything's a stain if you don't know how to market yourself. The only people that have a problem with M being on their resume are the same people that shit themselves at the thought of having to talk to people. Ever noticed the only people that claim that Epic's tech stack is a stain on your career have never worked here? Wouldn't call it enjoyable to work with but it won't hinder you. Plenty of people leave for FANG from here. It's mostly C#/JS/typescript and MUMPS which is sort of infamous. Fun? No. Career killer? No. The processes here are ass backwards, but again it's 100% on you if you let something as stupid as ancient language/process get in the way of your career. All that said, epic isn't fang tier, it's mostly where people who failed fang on-sites end up. So it's sort of a FANG stepping stone.
Epic was my first company. It's the worst! Don't go there! The shittiest west coast company is better than Epic. The only good thing is anytime I feel down I can remember it and be grateful for not being there anymore.
Old but relevant https://thedailywtf.com/articles/A_Case_of_the_MUMPS
Most of my friends from Epic landed FAANG gigs and haven't looked back
Wtf is epic systems? I bet anything would an upgrade from at&t though.
They make the software that probably handles your medical records
Oh that sounds so exciting, sign me up.
