I know both the companies are not highly "reputed" in the Blind community, but I currently have SWE offer from only the two of them. TC at Microsoft is higher, and is more well established and diversified. Cost of living at Madison is considerably lower than Seattle, which more than compensates for the lower TC. Which other factors should I look at while deciding between the two? Is one of them an obvious choice?
OP is in IT
As slowly as things move at Microsoft, Epic is slower. Are you passionate about healthcare? There are healthcare teams at Microsoft (but probably not as stable). Honestly Seattle is probably among the best TC vs CoL balances in the country.
What the heck. Last i checked D.E. Shaw paid very well (higher than both these companies) for swe’s. 🤔 All i remember about Epic was they were all gung ho over some archaic language called mumps or something. Are they still on that language? Do you know what language the team you’re joining at epic is using? I would go microsoft. It’ll open more doors.
Epic who?
Epic games was great
Epic? Lol.
Why'd you guys go AWS?
Go with what works. AWS has been a great partner and we feel they’re the best partner to push us forward.
Which epic ? Epic healthcare or epic games ?
Go MS I work in the healthcare IT space as a contractor and Epic is by design a place where kids can get their first job and enjoy a bay area like campus in the middle of nowhere. Technology design is very proprietary and there is no FANG like tech to get possibly exposed to limiting your next steps. Also privately held company with a lock on their industry so not much on any sort of innovation especially with very little actual competition.
As an actual epic loser, I'll give my tree fiddy. Epic isnt nearly as bad as many on the internet make it out to be (most complaints are from TS) but I think everyone here would take MS if given the option. That being said, average Dev works 42.5 hours a week and makes top 9th percentile income in the state right out of the gate. You're not gonna get FANG stock growth here but the pay is never the reason why people leave. Madison probably has much better social scene than Seattle. Tech here is outdated but new hires don't learn VB. Mostly web type stuff now. Processes are archaic but people are generally smart. You won't have trouble if you decide to leave. Cool team at epic could outweigh bad team at MS
Cool team at any X could outweigh bad team at any Y.
Do i guys still use that outdated language? Mumps or something
What do you smoke OP? MS is not reputable- am I dreaming or are my eyes failing me. MS has some of the best people I have ever come across. I negotiate multi million dollar deals and MS is the best in almost all respect.
I was referring to the poles on Blind. Please read the post carefully.
