I recently interviewed with Hubspot for a senior level engineering position. I’m not really looking around per se, but their SMB customer base appeals a bit more to me. This probably shouldn’t matter as an engineer - but I feel I have a bit more purpose when the work I am doing is helping smaller businesses.
I am expecting an offer unless they feel they can’t come close on compensation. I don’t know if I’m willing to take a pay cut, to be honest compensation is pretty good where I’m at - but I’m just a bit bored.
I had a few questions for current hubspot employees:
1) How are merit increases / promotions? I am a “top performer” currently, and have had pretty generous raises and refreshers. My fear is I leave for a similar TC, and then everything stagnates.
2) Any indication that the 401k match will increase? AFAIK the current match is $2,500 which is pretty low by industry standards.
3) How are the office politics within engineering? This is a pretty broad question, but I’m just looking to get the perspective of anyone working within the engineering group.

Promotions beyond Senior SWE aren't as common; most of our engineering population is a Senior SWE I or II. Beyond that is Tech Lead (me), Engineering Lead on the management track; or Staff, Principal Eng on the engineering track. There are a few other roles like Staff Tech Lead that are in between tracks.
2. Not from what I've heard, unfortunately. This is extremely common feedback provided to senior leadership.
3. In my experience, it ranges from very little to nonexistent. I came from a F100 financial services company whose culture was suffocating; HubSpot is the exact opposite of that.
Happy to answer any other questions to have.
I’ll underscore that refreshers are very much not guaranteed, and there may be years where you’re just ‘meeting expectations’ and get a small or no refresher.
