Equifax pwned

143M SSNs potentially stolen. Should we just let cloud companies (amazon, microsoft, google, etc) protect our digital data? These noobs don't seem to know much about security.

I don't know much about blockchain but I heard it does some magic in this space

VMware yvJS68 Sep 8, 2017

There should be a law that denies private entities from using SSNs. For tax reporting each employee and investor should get taxpayer ID numbers, as many as we want.

Feels much safer than if 300 were stolen.

Yahoo zdv52x Sep 7, 2017

Yeah, those idiot noobs with their 118 year old company.

Microsoft diyditx Sep 7, 2017

Age of company makes it even more likely to have legacy holes open to gain access.

I always assume my information is compromised. Make it a point to track my credit and inquiries and accounts every 2 weeks. Remember hackers just need one security hole to exploit while there are almost infinite threats that data needs to be protected from.

I think it's more about complete economic ecosystem disruption, followed by identity disruption at a national level. All these breaches add up to a unthinkable disruption play on the horizon.

They stored passwords in plaintext in their database and emailed them out if you request to recover your account.

Intel Plink33 Sep 8, 2017

No way. Proof? I haven't read that.

Microsoft AchieveMo Sep 8, 2017

Try the password recovery feature. They send your password in plaintext through email. That probably means it's stores in plaintext. Not that it matters much. Anyway, it is at least easily converted to plaintext by their system.

I already put a fraud alert on my account. You can do it for FREE (instead of paying their bullshit fee) by using the gov free credit report site. It requires credit companies to call your phone and ask additional questions. So, makes me feel a bit safer.

This is going to hurt their credit score a bit .
