Offer Evaluation: Reddit, Snowflake

Aug 3, 2021 32 Comments

This is an update from a previous post since I've received updated offers. Would love to get opinions. My main concerns are technical growth and maximizing compensation.

Reddit:
Salary: 190k
TC: 270k first year; 250k second, third years (3 year vesting)
Remote

Snowflake:
Salary: 180k
Bonus: 10%
TC: 325k for four years (4 year vesting)
Bellevue or San Mateo (no compensation adjustments)

Reddit does offer a 401k matching ($7k) while Snowflake does not offer any. Also, I don't have to pay rent currently due to living with family, so I would continue that if I chose to work with Reddit. I currently live in a state with one of the highest income tax rates (~10%). It does seem like rent in either San Mateo or Bellevue would cost me about $2,500/month, ~30k a year.

Reddit also has potential IPO upside, although I don't believe it will be a significant amount in the near future.

If my napkin math is right considering the additional expenses:
Reddit TC: 243k first year, 225k second and third years (after income tax)
Snowflake (Bellevue) TC: 288k every year (after rent and 401k contributions)
Snowflake (San Mateo) TC: 255k every year (after rent, income tax, and 401k contributions)

Please correct me if I'm wrong in these guesses.

For anyone who votes Snowflake, I'd also love to hear which location. San Mateo is the engineering hub - is it worth the compensation hit to be there?

YOE: 3
TC: 150k
